  • Age: Applicants must be born on or after April 2, 1991.

  • Must commit to returning to Ghana and working as a teacher following the scholarship time.

Applications that do not fully meet the eligibility requirements will not be accepted.

How do I apply?

To apply for this fully funded MEXT scholarship 2026, applicants must properly complete the official application forms and agree to the rules published by the Japanese government.
First, download and read the Application Guidelines and Forms from the official Study in Japan website. Complete the essential documents accurately, ensuring that they meet the eligibility criteria. SCHOLARSHIP PERIOD

The scholarship period, which should fall between October 2026 (or the course’s start month) and March 2028, is the time frame required to finish the training program at the accepting university. If the start date of the term the scholarship term will begin in September 2026, with the enrollment start date being September 1, 2026.

Nevertheless, the scholarship for that fourth month will not be awarded if the semester (student registration) starts in the middle of the month. Additionally, the scholarship time cannot be extended. For instance, the scholarship payment period will start in October 2026 if the accepting university’s semester runs from September 2 to September 30, 2026.

PROVISION OF SCHOLARSHIP SUSPENSION

The MEXT scholarship 2026 will no longer be awarded for the reasons listed below. The grantee may be required to refund all or a portion of the scholarship awarded up until that point if any of the following circumstances occur. The provision of the Scholarship may also be suspended while the matter is being decided:

  • A grantee’s application is deemed to have contained misleading information.
  • A grantee violates any article of his or her trust to the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology.
  • A grantee is sentenced to detention for an unlimited amount of time or for more than a year if they violate any Japanese laws.
  • As a disciplinary measure in compliance with the rules of the accepted university or preparation facility, a grantee may be suspended from their university, subject to other sanctions, or have their enrollment revoked.

  • It has been established that a grantee’s poor academic performance, suspension, or absence from the university or preparation facility will make it difficult for them to finish the study course within the allotted time.

  • A grantee entered Japan without a newly obtained “Student” visa or changed their status of residence from “Student” to any other status.

  • A grantee received another scholarship that was not approved for acceptance in conjunction with the MEXT Scholarship, such as a fellowship or scholarship from the Japanese government, a Japanese government-related organization, or others.

  • By the end of the last month of the scholarship period, a grantee has not returned to their home country and has not resumed teaching at their primary or secondary school or teacher training program.

Hiring Process

  • The first screening of applicants will be carried out by the Japanese diplomatic missions through the review of application materials, a written test (in both Japanese and English), and interviews.
  • The First Screening results communication date and time shall be determined separately by the Japanese diplomatic mission in the applicant’s nation; the rationale behind the screening’s outcomes will remain confidential. (However, passing the screening requires a certain level of Japanese language proficiency.) The MEXT Scholarship recipients will not always be chosen from among those who pass the First Screening.
  • Candidates who successfully complete the initial screening will be referred to MEXT. MEXT will choose the candidates after conducting the Second 6 Screening of those suggested by the Japanese diplomatic missions.

  • The Japanese diplomatic post in the applicant’s home country will notify them of the final selection results on a date that is specifically chosen. The recipients of the scholarship will also be informed of the name of the accepting university. The university placement choice will not be subject to any objections. The application will be turned down if the accepting university has not been chosen by the deadline (August 14, 2026).

Situations that cannot be avoided.

The Japanese government retains the right, at any moment before or after communication of the final selection results, to alter or cancel the arrival date, scholarship, and contents of the application criteria herein due to unavoidable or unforeseen circumstances.

Unavoidable circumstances include, but are not limited to, acts of God, acts of government (including local government, from now on referred to as government), acts of government authorities (such as travel or immigration restrictions imposed by the Japanese government or the governments of other foreign countries due to the occurrence of infectious disease), compliance with laws, regulations, or orders, fire, flooding, torrential rain, earthquakes, acts of war (regardless of a declaration of war), revolt, revolution or rebellion, strike, or lockout.
