One of the most significant modifications takes effect on January 8, 2026, when economic migration routes, including the Skilled Worker visa, will require a CEFR B2 level of English proficiency in reading, writing, hearing, and speaking. This is an increase from the current B1 criterion, indicating a stronger emphasis on workplace fluency and long-term integration.
Applicants who have already met the B1 standard in the UK will not be required to increase their English level when extending their visa through the same procedure.
International students will also feel the pinch, as maintenance fund requirements increase, requiring applicants to demonstrate more financial capacity before obtaining a UK student visa.
